Netflix South Africa Packages

While Netflix South Africa doesn’t offer the same amount of choice when it comes to content, they do offer the different package options you get in other countries. Each subscription package offers different features at different price points. They’ve also added a brand new option that promises some interesting improvements to the current Premium package. Here’s a quick look at your options.

Before explaining the differences between the Netflix plans it’s important to note that each plan offers exactly the same amount of content. You don’t get access to more shows or movies by paying for a more expensive plan. There are some features that make the more expensive plans worth considering though.

Netflix South Africa

Netflix Basic Plan

At the bottom of the list your cheapest Netflix package is their Basic Plan coming in at R99 per month. If you go for this option you’ll only be able to watch the content in SD (Standard Definition) and only on one device at a time. This is a great option if you have a slower internet connection or if you only ever watch Netflix on a tablet or small screen. It’s not a great option if you have a few family members that want to watch different shows at the same time.

Netflix Standard Plan

The Standard Plan is probably going to be the option most people go for and will cost you R139 per month. You get to watch the content in HD (High Definition) and on up to two devices at the same time. Of course, this assumes that your internet connection allows for the kind of bandwidth you need to manage two simultaneous HD video streams.

Netflix Premium Plan

If you’re not concerned with paying a bit more (R169 per month) then the Premium Plan is your best bet. You get to stream the content in HD and even UHD if available. This is great if you have a 4K or 8K television and want to get the best bang for your buck by streaming Netflix in UHD. The other advantage of this plan is that you can watch on up to 4 screens at once so you can keep everyone in the family happy. You’re going to need a really good internet connection to use this plan to the full though.

Netflix Ultra Plan

Apparently Netflix believe that “ultra” is better than “premium”. Netflix South Africa have just announced the release of their Ultra Plan although American Netflix subscribers have had this for a while now. This plan delivers the same features of the Premium Plan but with even higher quality audio. This is a great option if you’ve got an awesome sound system and enjoy watching those action movies or music shows with the volume knob turned up. At R239 per month it’s quite a big jump in pricing for the improved sound quality.

The nice thing about these different options is that you can change them whenever you want. The multi-screen options are a great way to share a Netflix subscription too. You don’t have to be in the same home to watch on different profiles. You could essentially have 4 different households each watching on their own profile from one Netflix subscription. Split the subscription cost 4 ways and it gets even cheaper than it already is. Hulu make it a little more difficult to do this but who know how they’ll handle things when they eventually go international.
